The building of Our Lady of Pompeii Church is connected to Saint Frances Cabrini, First American citizen to be canonized in the Catholic Church. Mother Cabrini's work in Dobbs Ferry in the early 1900s attracted Italian immigrants to the area to celebrate Mass in the Chapel on her property. As the crowds grew, Mother Cabrini suggested they build their own church. With that inspiration, fundraising soon began for the purchase of the property on Palisade Street.
Our Lady of Pompeii Church designed and built by its parishioners. The families of Altieri, Bucci, Paino, Ryan and Servillo all provided their talents in contracting, carpentry, plumbing and roofing to construct this Church.
