  • Our Food for the Hungry Program, an outreach ministry which operates from St. Joseph's Church at 141 Ashburton Avenue in Yonkers, helps those in need of assistance by providing supplemental groceries.  Each week 250 bags consisting of 10 food items are distributed to those in need.  Staffing the program for 90 minutes every Saturday requires a great number of volunteers.  So, there is always room for you!

There are various ways in which you can help in this mission.  Some of them are on site at St. Joseph's Church, while others take place during the week locally within the River Towns.

Locally, volunteers go to the Stop & Shop and Foodtown on Thursdays and Fridays to pick up baked goods and bring them to Sacred Heart to be loaded into the Food for the Hungry van.  On Friday mornings the van is driven to Elmsford to the Food Bank warehouse to pick up the weekly order.  On Saturday mornings volunteers either meet at Sacred Heart Church at 7:30 a.m. or travel directly to St. Joseph's church, arriving at 8:00 a.m. for the distribution.  The jobs at the distribution site vary from unloading the van, breaking down the cases, packing the bags, handing out the bags, and recording the client's name and family sizes.  The work is not physically demanding but it is very rewarding.  It is done in groups and goes  quickly.  Volunteers are encouraged to pick one weekend a month.

The only requirement is a willingness to help others by providing assistance in feeding those who are hungry.  The reward for participating in this ministry is knowing that you are fulfilling a fundamental precept of our faith by helping others.
